is opening up to the so called, "Average man." I came across this short animation and it has quickly become my favorite. The immersive journey and emotion comes out magnificently drawing me into the story. The director Tom Jenkins is to be commended for his creativity and vision for this story of a small desk toy that longs to escape the confines of his office tomb. type='text'>Searching for the LIght with Tom Hido

Every once and a while I will come across a photographer that really inspires me to dig deeper in order to move past the mundane and boring and strive for perfection. Todd Hido is one such photographer. When I viewed his body of work I was struck by the realism in a sea of over processed, over saturated and just plain blaahhhhh photos out there. I knew there was something different about Todd's work besides just the captivating subjects and the minimalism he brings to his photos. The photos had a great depth to them in tonality and color but were real and tangible to my eye. He also, get ready for this, shoots film yes you heard right film. Todd prefers to use a Pentax 6X7 SLR for his body of work. I love his reasoning which is if it isn't broke don't fix it. He shoots with 400 speed color negative film and processes his own prints in his darkroom. I am of the opinion that the nest in fine art images are still being produced on medium format film or larger formats. His personal art does inspire me to look further within myself then project outward my photographic desires. This is a great interview with Todd done a short while ago which helps you peer into his way of seeing. I hope you are as enlightened as I was. Enjoy.

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="337" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/mFE18gxHFGE" opens to new possibilities. I refer to this as a sort of high where the brain chemistry is just firing away churning out new ideas and renewed vigor for discovery and experimenting in my photography. This is the way I felt after watching this video and seeing the work of Michael Levin. I am just in awe of the simplicity of his photographs and the technical excellence which they clutch to themselves. This is in stark contrast to the many photographers that shoot and shoot but never attain their form to this level of the art. I hope to keep my eyes set on the teaching learned in this video in all forms of my work. The videography is also exceptional and really matches the body of work Michael creates. Enjoy.

Film what is that?

In the world we live in today as photographers the pace is mind numbing and maybe even creatively numbing. I was just having the conversation with my mother that when weddings were shot using film solely 300 to 400 shots were common for an average wedding. Today in the land of digital people treat a camera as if it is the latest 3000 round per minute military submachine gun and blast away at the client generating thousands of files which are either fundamentally the same or just creatively junk. I myself have been guilty of just this turning out so many photos to be viewed and culled that it can take a considerable amount of time. This all leads to the video below where we find a well respected photographer who is traveling the world to photograph the most influential people of the second which is just about the amount of time we have to spend on any one thing before moving on the the next. Does this gentleman annihilate his subjects in a hail of frames to only hope that one or two might be pretty good. No, he tests the light and manipulates the light, uses the light he is given then adds his on light. He tests then tests again then retests to make sure the exposure is just right. He uses Polaroids to get a glimpse of what will expose on that piece of celluloid in the end. Then he loads his Mamiya 7II with medium format film and begins to create art not hammer away hoping for at least a good shot out of a thousand. Each press of the shutter on a film camera represents an investment in time, money, skill, experience and creativity. This investment means the mind stays conscious of the fact and concentrates because each actuation of the shutter counts. Enjoy the video and take care of your personal composition. Try to think of the shot before you actuate high speed drive and take the shutter into warp speed. Peace!

Shana and Matt

How would I describe this wedding fun fun fun and what a beautiful day. When you get married in San Diego you are almost guaranteed an awesome day and this one did not disappoint. I was the second shoot to a good friend of mine Pete Larson of San Diego Wedding Pics. Pete is a phenomenal photographer and you should look at his work. Thanks Pete! Now Matt and Shana were an awesome couple and obviously just a perfect for each other. The picked a beautiful venue for the wedding, the Bahia Hotel, right on the San Diego Bay. The ceremony took place at a beautiful secluded garden at the hotel with a quaint pond in the background. Then when the ceremony was over and formals were done we all boarded an antique paddle wheel boat and headed out into the bay for an incredible cruise. The atmosphere was spectacular with a massive stained glass roof over the dining area and then it was down to the lower floor for the party and a party it was. Words can not describe the incredible ambiance of this paddle wheeler. To cap off the evening the paddle wheeler maneuvers into position to see the fireworks display from Sea World. Congratulations Shana and Matt you both were incredible and thanks Pete for the opportunity to shoot with you.
Pocket Wizard Love

Hey all, just wanted to do a little intro to my latest acquisitions the newly released Pocket Wizard Mini TT1 , the Flex TT5 and the AC3 zone controller for Nikon. I am super excited to be able to finally get these gems in my hot little hands. Ever since the Canon version came out I have been anxiously awaiting for Pocket Wizard to finally produce the Nikon version since that is my camera system of choice. Well, just got them all out of the boxes and did a few test shots and the one awesome thing I can tell you right up front is I am getting spot on TTL exposures using Hyper Synch capabilities at 1/400th of a second yes you read that right 1/400th of a second. Can you say awesome exposures in bright sunlight. This is not the magical High Speed Synch which reduces your flash power this is a straight up regular exposure using TTL. So am I happy oh yea I am. The capabilities of these units is incredible and I can not wait to get out in some crappy midday light to give them a try. We currently have rain and a nice blanket of clouds so that will have to wait. As far as range, I had my son watching the flash connected to the TT5 as I walked around my 3400 square foot home trying to put as many walls and obstacles between me and the flashes as possible and not one did the Pocket Wizards not fire. Awesome. My first real test of the system will come next week when I do an engagement shoot on location. We are going to be doing a little hiking to a location so the portability of my system will be paramount. I will let you know how it goes and post up some pics after the shoot. Well that's it for now be well and stay type='text'>Pocket Wizard Love

Hey all, just wanted to do a little intro to my latest acquisitions the newly released Pocket Wizard Mini TT1 , the Flex TT5 and the AC3 zone controller. Well that's it for now be well and stay sexy!!!!!
The Lost Film

Human interaction is so important to most all of us. We cherish the moments we spend with our loved ones and hold dear all of those memories created second by second. Only photos seem to be able to capture the essence of those human interactions we experience forever freezing them in time. This video characterizes to me in many ways the ability of we as human beings to be able to coexist together on this little small spinning ball in a mind numbingly vast expanse we call the universe. Every moment counts every interactions matters. This story touches me in that you have strangers opening their lives to someone they have never met. Cultures colliding and coalescing together in order to just return this small celluloid strip of memories and bonds are formed forever. Enjoy.

<iframe allowfullscreen="" the right job and photography is no different. If you want a great round catchlight use an octa. If you want that great window light soft look go for a large box up close. the light just right. I watched this video and gained a renewed perspective on the art of photography. I realized how little I use all of my sense in order to capture compelling images. Always trying to see the image but not smelling, feeling or tasting the image. Is this not what we want the viewer to come away with after viewing a compelling image. Enjoy and stay sexy.

Happy Holidays!!!

Hi all,

Just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I hopr the upcoming year brings you great joy and peace. For the photographers out there I pray that you will continue to grow in your passion and find success in your chosen endeavor. I plan on releaseing some equipment reviews and will be posting up some photos from recent photo shoots that I have neglected to update my blog with. One of my New Years resolutions is to stay on top of the blog more and kep some interesting posts coming your way so stay tuned and thanks for checking in.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Joe scales the Empire State building to get the shot. His determination to get the shot no matter what is very obvious in this clip. He appears to be shooting with an F5 which is a 35mm film camera so there are no little windows to show you what you just took so you can do it again. Whether we differ in mind or spirit we live in a nation that embraces diversity of people and backgrounds. This great country beckons for us to become what we want to be and does not choose our lot in life. Through sweat and hard labor we can shape our futures and not have an oppressive government determine our future for us. We each pull ourselves up by our bootstraps daily and venture into the great nation hopefully not asking what this country can do for us but what can we do for ourselves. This is the greatest nation on earth just ask all of those who wait patiently to gain admittance as citizens so they can realize their dreams for themselves, their family and their new country. We are truly fortunate to live in this great land from sea to shining sea. Stay sexy ya'll.

Welcome Ryder Henry

I had an awesome photo shoot recently with an incredible little boy. The moment this little guy got to the studio he stole the show. I shot this little guy for about one and a half hours and he was so good and accommodating the whole time. I can definitely see how he would immediately capture the heart of anyone who would have the honor of meeting him. I had instructed his parents to be prepared if he began to protest and we would call it and come back another day but he never put up a fuss one bit. Both Matt and Christy were the best. It showed they were definitely proud brand new parents as well they should be with a little boy like Ryder. It was my pleasure and honor capturing Ryder's first photos. Enjoy the slideshow!!!!

Florian Schulz's Nature & Wildlife Photography Tips - Taking Nature Photos

Another excellent interview by Marc Silber with German Landscape and wildlife photographer Florian Schulz. The images Florian turns out are truly inspiring to me. the way he stalks his shots sometimes taking days, weeks or months of revisiting locations until he comes away with shots he is proud of is what high quality photography is all about. He has a dedication to his craft and it definitely shows in his photos. You will not be disappointed after watching this video so sit back, relax and absorb. I was glued to this video as he uses Graflex 4X5 view cameras with Polaroids. This is photography at it's essence. I have said many times that the resurgence of film will be rapid and drastic as people move from the instant gratification of digital to the center of the art form again. I love shooting film and digital but the nostalgia associated with my film work is a pure love and respect for the medium. This will be a real treat. There are three parts to this interview please watch them all.

Wow two posts for today I must really have nothing better to do but I really needed to pass this on to you. I get a news feed from The Strobist and he turned me onto this video that is almost one hours worth of excellent learning about a on location commercial shoot that could normally cost you but is provided for free by Photoshelter. Photoshelter has some great learning for free so check em out and enjoy this excellent on location lighting session. Guess I really really really need an Elinchrom 74" Octa now. Of course a slew of Profoto 7b's wouldn't hurt either. I was doing some research on what kind of video experience I could gain from DSLR for additional offering to my clients and came across some other fantastic videos. I am a Nikon shooter by choice so I am particularly interested in what a Nikon can do for me and am quite impressed. I am not looking to go into the videography business but do believe the ability to capture short high def video clips has a lot of great potential for not only journalism but all of the other photography disciplines I partake in. So I thought I would post some of those videos here on the blog for you to enjoy. I am an avid Nikon shooter but I have to admit that Canon is at the head of this game with their 5D Mark II and the new 7D. Their 1080p movies although without the feel of cinema film are fantastic when put together as well as Vincent Laforet does. This video is all available light with no supplementary lighting at all. Also the video was shot at 6400 ISO and if you can find any noise I think it is negligible. So sit back and enjoy.

Nocturne from Vincent Laforet on Vimeo.

Walk in The Park

Had a great day today hanging out with the photoministry from my church. Glad to see all those that could make it and hope those who could not are doing great. Also had a great time hanging out with my good friend Dan and then going to Oggi's for a little after the photo shoot chow and adult beverage. It was a great day for some interesting photos. The sky was overcast badly for much of the morning and we even got a few sprinkles here and there however, when I see those gloomy skies I immediately think of HDR. HDR just seems capable of making a low contrast, dreary sky into something magical. I am always blown away by the way the processing can bring the best together and yield some mind blowing images. I hope you enjoy the pics, they were rushed a bit and I tried a few new tweaks here and there. For anyone who is wondering, I start my workflow in Lightroom (Currently 2 until the full release of 3 comes out). I then select the photos for processing and export to Photomatix then it is back intoLightroom (I love the Photomatix - Lightroom integration). After the import back intoLightroom it is off to Photoshop where the final curves adjustments, levels adjustments, masking and noise reduction (Noiseware by Imagenomic <----- Love this does an awesome job) is completed. Of course Photoshop (CS4 by the way) is tightly integrated with Lightroom so the pics are saved right back into Lightroom. Well that about sums up my workflow. Honestly most of my wedding, event, corporate etc. etc. workflow can be easily handled in Lightroom but HDR requires a lot more finesse to get a final product I am happy with. Well gotta go gonna loose an hour of sleep tonight from some reason or other. Till I blog again you stay sexy.

My Next Lens Just Arrived

Well Nikon finally made some new lens announcements and since I am not honored to be among the testers I am learning of it first hand and sharing with you. The lens I now lust after is the new and just announced, drumroll please, Nikkor 24mm F1.4 ahhhhhhh. This is a lens I have been desiring for some time now. I love my 50mm F1.4 but in certain situations just wanted something wider. I currently have the 14 - 24mm F2.8 which is a phenomenal lens all on its own but can not throw focus like a F1.4 and after all an F1.4 has 4 times the light gathering ability so you can shoot at two full stops less in ISO in order to preserve image quality. I love using F1.4 at weddings especially to get those natural light moody shots and let's face it getting a shot with just candle light is plain awesome. I will be first on the list to get this lens when it is released and will post some work with it as soon as I can. Until next time take care and God be with you. By the way I apologize for not being on here as much as I wanted to but life happens. I promise to keep new information and work coming at a greater pace in the future.

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; The scenery is incredible seeing these waves of clouds rolling in just like an awesome set on a west coast beach. The serenity of the lone hang glider surfing these waves in the sky as graceful as a bird. This was an awesome undertaking seeing the engineering that the photographer had to overcome in order to get the shots his client wanted. Makes me think of the creativity which needs to go into the shoots we do and being able to think outside of the box in order to get extraordinary results. Enjoy the video.

Randy Moves On

My brother by another mother Randy Torres, photographer extraordinaire, decided to fly the coop and head east to the Big Apple. Randy was an integral part of the photoministry at East Lake Church where I also attend and am active in the ministry. Randy was a mentor to me and is sorely missed for his expertise, knowledge, compassion, companionship and friendship. But on the plus side I have a place to crash when I attend the next PDN Photo Expo YAY!!!

On a different note the above panorama, from Randy's going away wake, was actually taken and stitched all in my iPhone. Randy is the one in the awesome pork pie hat. I use a nice little piece of software available form the iTunes App Store called Pano ( I in no way get an compensation from Pano for this review, unless they insisted then OK). The software is very simple to use and has overlapping exposures so that you can line up all of your shots. It then gives you the option of using the shot or taking it again. After that you just sit back and let the software do the work. It dumps the final product right in your camera roll on the phone and is then available for uploading to your favorite social network or whatever. I was amazed when created my first panorama and continue to love to use it when the right moment strikes. If you use and iPhone please go check it out and give it a try I think you will be pleasantly surprised as I was.

A Little Monkeying Around

This past Thursday I had a great opportunity to photograph the life development team at Eastlake Church in Chula Vista for there next children's series based on an Indiana Jones theme. The team did a great job with some props and their costumes were spot on for the shoot. They are a great bunch to work with always willing to follow a little artistic direction and not afraid to offer up some ideas of their own. These are the folks that work directly with the children every weekend and they do a phenomenal job keeping the children interested and plugged in to the teachings of Jesus Christ. My own children attend these classes and never complain about having to go to church.

For the technical aspects of the shoot Mr. Dan Castrellon provided his Norman strobes for the main lights and also provided the background and technical support. I provided my Hensel's to help blow out the background for a high key effect so that it would be easier to mask. I did the shooting using my Nikon D700 set to F16 at 1/125 and ISO 400. The lights were set at varying ratios with the mains being fired into silver umbrellas and the rear fills using a softbox and a beauty dish. There was also a third background light that was aimed directly at the backdrop bare bulb.

I also need to give a great big shout out to Nikki Wells of Nikki Wells Photography who is also a member of the photo team at the church. She bravely answered the call of the wild when no one else was willing to step forward and wear the super happy monkey costume. Nikki you made a fabulous monkey and I think your kids will be scarred for life after seeing there Mom's head on the monkey body when the monkey head came off.

All in all I am very pleased with the results and I know the team will do a great job in post and putting together another awesome presentation for the kids. Good job guys on continuing to do the work of the Lord glad I could help.

<img style="display:block; of It's Time Public Address Announcing, hired me to document the Park View Little League Homecoming to Chula Vista CA. I thought I would post up a few of the pics I took that day for your viewing pleasure. I love my art of photography and this style of journalistic coverage is very appealing. First in a journalistic style you have the freedom to flow with the events as they unfold. You also have to have your head on straight with eyes and ears wide open to try to anticipate events as they are coming up. This was especially true at this event as much of my information on what was coming up was gleaned from staff as they were talking and I was within earshot. I love the freedom my clients give me to be able to use my best judgement to be able to document as I want and feel. That is what this art is about to me it is about emotion, movement, light, moments all rolled into the same exact point in time when my shutter clicks. Man I love my chosen art form. So here are some photos from the event for you to enjoy and hopefully they will impart some of the emotion that was felt during the event by me and all, approximately 10,000, who attended.

<img style="display:block; A client of mine, Steve Eicher of Unique Mobile Sounds, had me out to shoot the Park View Little League Homecoming and what an event it was. Being able to be on the field during the event was incredible. The stadium at Southwestern College was filled to overflowing. The estimate was that 10,000 people were there to support these great young men, their coaches, families and support staff after their win of the Little League World Series. The energy from the field was just incredible and Steve Eicher kept the crowd pumped up and did a phenomenal job as the official emcee of the event.

Several dignitaries were present at the event including the Chula Vista Mayor, her husband Ron Cox, local representative Marty Block, U.S. Representative Bob Filner, and the list goes on. It was great seeing all of these people rallying around the kids and their coaching staff and when the kids arrived on the back of a Chula Vista fire rig the place errupted with cheers and applause. I of course had to concentrate on the job at hand and began snapping off shots as fast as I could as these local heroes walked into the stadium. I also had my good friend Mike Thiem with me as my second photographer and he did a great job of capturing some awesome moments.

These kids were as humble as could be, they truly loved the crowd and were obviously just trying to take it all in. I was able to be the only photographer to gain access to the VIP area after the event and talking to these guys one on one you really realize what a class act they all are. Every one of their parents should be proud. So thanks to Steve Eicher, Cheryl Cox (Chula Vista Mayor) and all involved for a memorable event.

Below is a video showing myself and Mike at the event doing what we love to do. I am at the beginning of the video shooting as they come into the fenced area. I am wearing a black cap. Mike is in a blue button up shirt shooting them on the infield area.

Hotlanta to Hampton

Hi all,

Well here I am at 1 am posting to my blog from Hampton Va. My buddy Randy Torres of www.randorex.com are here in Hampton Va. to shoot a sweet wedding. The couple is awesome and we are both stoked to be here on my first destination wedding. Big congrats to the couple Kierston and Dominic and thanks for the hospitality.

The trip started out well enough with good intentions. But things would prove to not be so smooth in no time. We missed our 6am flight from San Diego yes that is right 6am so I was up around 4am. So we missed the flight even though we were at the airport over 1.5 hours early. The baggage check in line and security line were longer than the lines at Disneyland. So we cought the next flight after a couple of hours then ended up in Hotlanta, Georgia. Heat and hunidity go hand in hand in Georgia and Virginia for that matter. Well to get to our departing terminal in Hotlanta we had to take a train and walk for about 5 miles man that is a big airport. After all of that walking we waited for another couple of hours only to find that only one of us could get on that flight. So we both stayed to catch the next flight out but the bright side was a soldier was waiting on standby also and was able to get on the plane which was awesome.

We then had to take another train to another concourse to catch the next flight out and spent a grand total of 4+ hours in Hotlanta. With the time change from the west coast and all I was getting beat. Well we made it on the flight and finally arrived in Norfolk Virginia around 8:50pm and was glad to finally have the end of this journey straight out of a twilight zone in sight. Our bags were already waiting for us and so were the lovely bride and groom. Well got to get going must get sleep for next 18 hours straight thanks to black out curtains and air conditioning which is an absolute necessity around these here parts. Join me next time for the continuing saga of my first destination wedding. Of course I am doing this in between photo edit sessions when I need a break. I am really stoked at the level of customization you can do with a blog and will continue to tinker with it from time to time as time permits. I was able to expand the header across the entire top of the block and add borders around the various sections. I changed the background color and am working on adding a background image to spruce it up a little. I also added the small slideshow player in the header. I do this all for you my readers and hope that you like it. Please leave me any feedback you like and I will respond as soon as I can. If you want help customizing your blog please check out this link to BlogBuster and I am sure you will find the site as helpful as I have. If you haven't been to my website in awhile (Shane Stiles Photography) please check it out in the near future as I will be adding some new content to the gallery from my last engagement shoot and am trying to get some sports pics from the last Holiday Bowl and Poinsettia Bowl up. Bye for now, take care and God bless.

I'm a lifer

Well I pulled the trigger today and joined up with Showit Inc. for the long haul by purchasing a lifetime membership to their excellent web site solution for photographers or anyone else who might need an awesome website. They were a great, young couple to work with at their engagement shoot in Balboa Park in San Diego. I can't wait for them to see the individual pieces of art we created together that day and pick their favorites. I am really looking forward to seeing both of them again.
